Getting confused: Home network 101? Routers, Switches, and access points?

Alright I’m getting more and more confused the more I research.

So I have a 16 port switch at my home. I wanted to connect the internet, and was thinking of putting in two wireless routers on opposite sides of the house, and hardwire networks to the other rooms in the house.

Now it looks like I can’t do that? I see a lot that says the switch has to be plugged into the router- I can do that, but then I’m limited to one wifi router (which would be OK)- however, now I also see wifi router type things called "access points". Which sounds like a wifi router without the router part, but I can’t find anywhere that it says you can connect a wifi access points TO a switch.

So can I get 2 access points and connect them to the switch? What about 1?
Can I connect the switch to one wireless router?
Or is it impossible to have Wifi if you have a switch? thats what it seems like, but a lot of what I read are from the early 2000′s.

if someone can give me pointers as to what I need to buy, and what I need to connect to what, that would be great. Right now I have a cable modem coming in to a 16 port switch hardwired to rooms in the house. I also have 1 wireless (BG) router, 1 wireless (A) router, and 1 Verizon Fios router/modem combo (moved from NY- we dont have verizon down here). I think I’d like to also have wireless N, but don’t need 4 wireless. I’d gladly buy access points or whatever I need.

Thanks!

Best way to set up a school Whireless network over two buildings ?

Hello there

I’m going to help a public school in setting up a wireless network with shared internet business connection.

What i want to know is what’s the best way to do this, and the hardware is not a problem, they want a reliable network. So whatever it takes is possible.

There are two parts in the building that are far away from each other,
what i was thinking is to put one router on each side and connect the two routers with a twisted pair cable, but the distance is gonna be around 150 meters , so im not sure if a 150m length cable is gonna do it, Will i need to install a bridge half the way or not ?

Each router is gonna be connected to two access points, one on the right, and the other on the left. The access points will be connected to the router by a cable too.
Then the access points will distribute the connection to the computers around it.
Is that a good choice, or do you have any suggestions ?

Can I share internet connection between my pc and my notebook using 2 wireless USB network adapters?

WITHOUT A ROUTER OR ACCESS POINT…
Can these two different computers share an internet connection if they both have wireless network adapters on Ad Hoc mode?

If so I will get a usb wireless network adapter for my PC () and try to establish a network between my pc and notebook. Then it will be nice for me to check my emails in another room.

I heard that Ad Hoc mode works fine for this purpose.

Is it a good idea? It seems a cheap solution for me.
What are cons? Or should I pay 0 more to buy access points or a new wireless modem and throw away my old modem?
Currently I have
1 PC
1 Notebook
1 adsl internet connection (standart, line)
1 USB wireless network adapter for my notebook (that could also be plugged on PC)

How do I connect to this network on my DS using the Wifi Connection?

First I used my computer to find out what networks are within my range. The networks that showed up were Keith and linksys. I turned on my DS and searched for these access points but the signals weren’t strong enough to use those networks. Then I searched for a wireless access point on my DS and on my computer at the same time and a new network came up, hpsetup. It said it was a computer to computer network. I tried connecting to it on my DS and even though it had full bars it said that it couldn’t connect. I tried on my computer and it connected but it couldn’t reach any web pages. How do I get it to work?

This is a Wifi connection, the ones that let you play with any one in the world. I’m not talking about those games that you have to be right next to the person in order for it to work.
