I’ve never had even a decent set of speakers in my entire life. For the past year I’ve resorted to headphones. Now as a music producer/gamer I’m looking for the best sound quality not what can play the loudest, especially since I’m upstairs and my house is very hollow so with family around I really can’t blast music anyway. So I’m caught between the "M-Audio Studiophile AV 40" and the "Z-2300 2.1 Speaker System". This is mainly for music production and secondarily for gaming. Help me out please.

Im not sure but I will tell you that professional recording studio monitoring speakers can make lousy speakers for everyday listening.

I am a video editor for a small film company and I aslo do all of the sound editing. What I have found is that for editing a high grade pair of bose headphones work the best. Because they do not echo or allow in ambeant noise giving you the best chance to hear the real sound you are producing. Best if you order online.
But for gaming or typical use I suggest a well built surround sound system that you spent a good abount of money on (yes they can be pluged into a computer you dont have to get a Computer Speaker system). Just go into a store and ask what system they would suggest, you may feel like granny asking about computers, but if you are asking people on answers its just as bad if not worse.
Sound production and gaming are two very different things and although it may seem like they shouldn’t require different systems they do. If you cannot spend money on both the speakers and headphones it really comes down to what is more important to you.
