Absolutely. Besides, there isn’t a "HP" brand of hard drives. You can also transfer your files with this device:

You connect the old hard drive to this device, and then the device to a another computer or laptop via USB. You would then be able to access all the files on it.

Any 2.5" notebook hard drive should work.
Western Digital makes the Scorpio series, and they are very reliable and affordable.
If you buy from Western Digital, they will also allow you to download Acronis True Image from their website. Acronis makes an image of your old hard drive and copies it over to your new hard drive. Unless you want to do a fresh install, in which case you won’t need Acronis.

As long as it is the same interface (IDE) or (SATA) it will work !
