Training in Microsoft Project includes not only instruction on the software but basic project management techniques. One of the fundamental concepts of project management is the critical path.

What Is the Critical Path?

Most projects contain a large number of tasks. The critical path is the particular sequence of tasks that must be complete for the project to be considered complete. This path dictates the finish date on your project.

The critical path is not just a list of vital tasks. It is a specific sequence of tasks, each one depending on the last. Your project might have several sequences like this, even several critical sequences. The one that is projected to finish the latest dictates project completion and is therefore the critical path.

As the project progresses, different sequences might be named as critical. Consider a project with two vital task sequences which we’ll call A and B. At the beginning of the project, sequence A is projected to take six months and B is projected to take five months. Since A will take longer it is the critical path.

After two months, A is running well ahead of schedule and is now expected to take only three months more while B has suffered delays and has four months left. B is now the critical path.

What is a Critical Task?

The short definition of a critical task is any task that will affect the end date of the project if delayed. You learn several techniques for task definition in Microsoft Project training. Some of the characteristics will cause a task to be marked as critical.

Absence of slack is the most common definition. Slack is how long a task can be delayed and still be on schedule. A three-day task with a seven-day deadline has four days of slack. A task with no slack is critical.

You can change the slack threshold in order to give yourself warning that a project is about to run behind schedule. For example, if you increase the threshold from zero to two days than any task with two days or less of slack will be marked as critical, alerting you to a potential problem.

Tracking the Critical Path

Microsoft Project training shows several techniques to track the critical path. The Gantt chart will display critical tasks and links in red by default so you can easily pick them out.

You can display only critical tasks on the Gantt chart by selecting Critical in the view filter. You can group them by going to the Project menu, selecting Group By, then Critical. Display multiple critical paths using Tools/Options, clicking the Calculation tab, and selecting the “Calculate multiple critical paths” check box.

Microsoft Project training can also demonstrate methods to manage critical paths. Breaking a task into smaller tasks that can be worked on simultaneously, or modifying dependencies so that the critical path is more flexible are just two methods you might learn.

Following on from Manhunt 2 getting the ‘ok’ for release game ratings are coming under increasing scrutiny. Manhunt 2 will carry an 18 certificate after a nine month battle between rockstar gaming and BBFC over the release. The game release comes just as the gaming industry is awaiting the results of the Bryron review into the impact of technology on Children.

A Private Members Bill proposing more government oversight of the BBFC was tabled last month but eventually talked out. Julian Brazier, Conservative MP for Canterbury and Whitstable, who originally introduced the bill, had said he wanted to “legislate against video nasties”. Writing on his blog before it was talked out, he said: “My bill aims to make the British Board of Film Classification accountable to Parliament.

“It would give a Parliamentary committee the power to review and veto key appointments and the guidelines the BBFC works to.”

Mr Brazier then told BBC News: “The problem is that the Video Appeals Committee needs sorting out: it always sides with the industry and only the industry itself can appeal.”

Dr Tanya Byron is due to deliver her review into the internet and video games and their effect on children at the end of March.

Games consultant and former Edge magazine editor Margaret Robertson said the Manhunt 2 overruling came at a bad time for the BBFC. She said: “Whatever the merits of this specific decision, what’s frustrating is that the BBFC’s system remains a very robust approach to classifying games, in that it’s based on an independent party viewing and playing the game, and taking into account context and tone.”

She added: “I still feel the BBFC sets a world-wide gold standard of game certification.”

She said that the BBFC’s system was superior to the European voluntary approach of Pegi, which runs in parallel to UK-specific classification.

“Compared to the Pegi system, which is based on a questionnaire filled in by the game publisher, the BBFC system is clearly a more sophisticated and nuanced approach.”
She added: “As games become more complex, and start to tackle more diverse and challenging themes, we need an intelligent, sensitive ratings system which is alert to the fact that games can and do have a subtext to what they portray, just as film and television can.”

Ms Robertson said that a much wider debate was needed about how the BBFC was run and how much oversight was appropriate for government.

Only a small percentage of games, those that contain violence or sex, are referred to the BBFC.

A spokeswoman for the BBFC said the body continued to work to the rules laid down by the 1984 Video Recordings Act.

She said there had been no suggestion from government that its role as a video games classifier was about to change.

Developer David Braben, head of Frontier Games, said self-certification of games by developers was a potential solution.

“We’ve heard reports that the Byron Review will say that the classification system is not entirely working.

“The law is a very blunt weapon. The real problem is that games are quite complicated and are a non-linear media, and are therefore much harder to rate.
There is strong argument for self ratings. For me, the Pegi system has worked well.

“Developers intimately know the content – whether its cartoon violence, nasty violence, or has sexual elements – and can apply ratings directly.

“The issue is almost whether you need something above 18, which Americans have as ‘Adults Only’, which is used for porn and cannot be on public display.”

He added: “We need a system that is very clear to all of us. At times I fear the BBFC feels it is powerless.”

Richard Wilson, chief executive of Tiga, the national body which represents the commercial interests of developers, said members were seeking consistent standards for games, films and TV.

He said: “The whole ratings system is going to be under review because of the Byron Review.

“Whatever was going to be the outcome of this particular case with Manhunt 2, the government has initiated the Byron Review and that will supersede that decision

“We feel that the same standards that apply to films and TV should apply to games.”

Office 2008 Ships Without VBA

The controversy began when the latest version of the software suite for the Macintosh, Office 2008, was released without VBA support.

The reasons for the change were rooted in the Macintosh itself. It has always been difficult to keep VBA compatible with the Macintosh processors. It would have required a great deal of effort to maintain support for something that is used by no other application than Office.

Instead, the Macintosh version of Office supports AppleScript for macro creation. The object models of the two languages are equivalent so it is a simple matter of changing syntax. However “simple” doesn’t mean “easy” and workbooks with large, complicated macros are going to be difficult to upgrade.

VBA Is Safe in Windows Office

Recently, The Register reported that Office 2009, the next Windows release of Office, would also not include VBA. This was an incorrect report and The Register has since retracted the statement, but not before creating an online firestorm.

The reasons for the removal of VBA from Mac Office are irrelevant to a Windows environment. Microsoft has stated definitively that VBA will be in Office 2009 and they have no plans to remove it from future versions.

Should VBA Be Deprecated?

There is good reason for Microsoft to consider abandoning VBA in favour of a more secure macro environment. VBA is one of the biggest security holes in the Office suite and Microsoft is working to protect Office from all vulnerabilities. However the balance between future needs and backward compatibility has always been a tough decision for software developers.

Although VBA may eventually be deprecated from the Windows Office environment, that doesn’t mean the macros well become obsolete. For example, Microsoft removed XLM macros in favour of VBA in 1995 and yet they still function even in Excel 2007.

If Microsoft introduces a new, more secure macro language in Office 2009, VBA will still be an available tool and that means there will always be a place for Excel VBA training in your organization.

Even if your business uses only Macs, VBA is still part of the picture. Most organizations don’t immediately upgrade so older versions of Office are in use well after they cease to be the leading edge. When you do upgrade to Office Mac 2008, you are going to need Excel VBA training to understand those obsolete macros so that you can rewrite them in AppleScript.

CCP Games title EVE Online is run on one of the largest clustered super computers on the planet, with 5,000 star systems and several million unique objects in play at any one time. Their server system is so robust that they schedule a one hour down time every day to run backups, and the system can handle up to 25,000 players (and sometimes more) without collapsing.

Because of the gigantic size of the database that players interact with, EVE doesn’t lend itself to private server play, and there are no EVE Online private servers.

In large part, the lack of EVE Online private servers is a good for the overall play of the game. Much of the appeal of playing EVE is the sheer number of players working simultaneously on the universe. Because EVE runs on a single cluster, there’s never a choice, like in World of Warcraft, or City of Heroes, to decide which server you’re going to be on based on the server your friends are on. You’re either on the Tranquility server (if you use the English language interface) or the Serenity server (if you’re using the Chinese language interface), and there are usually ten thousand or more players on simultaneously to interact with. There is a third server run by CCP, the test server, called Singularity, and they recommend that everyone set up an account there to test things and provide input into the next development of the game.

By contrast for World of Warcraft, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of private servers out there, that will let anywhere from a hundred to maybe a thousand players log in simultaneously. For WoW, this is an opportunity to “grind in private”; if you tried doing that on EVE Online, you’d have a hard time hooking up with other players at all, due to the massive size of the database to explore.

In a real sense, private servers for MMOs are a dangerous thing for the companies that produce the games. Those games are expensive to write, expensive to maintain, require paid staff to keep on top of things, and require an ongoing development budget and marketing plan. The subscription model you pay is what keeps the game being developed; setting up “hacked” MMO private servers simply hastens the day when the company publishing the MMO can’t sustain the operation any longer, and has to shut things down.

Fortunately for CCP, an EVE Online private server is a really difficult thing to set up for a home user; most people don’t have home based clusters of high end computers, each with 16 gigs of RAM, to try and make it happen.
