I need to buy a PC laptop (not a mac) but find some trouble in understanding the battery and graphic card specifications. What are the standards, or the basic facts that I need to understand? I need a battery to last a minimum of 8 hours, and a graphic card to complement high quality photos, HD videos and moderate gaming.
I want to understand the elementary facts ,considering the battery and graphic card, that would help guide me in laptop shopping.
Thank you for your time.

unless you upgrade your battery to the biggest on any laptop the most you get out of a computer with those specs is 6 hours- the Alienware MX11
the only other computer that compliments what you want, is the macbook.
best would be to go to newegg.com and just insert everything you want

Well a laptop battery that has more cells is one that lasts longer than a battery with less cells.
This is what you should take in account when shopping for a laptop.
It’s also preferable for it to be a Li-Ion battery( Lithium – Ion ).
When talking about a laptop graphics card:
AVOID ANYTHING THAT’S INTEL RELATED (GMA.. X4500HD..) – it’s simply a slow graphics chip.
AVOID ANYTHING THAT’S NOT A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD(integrated chips are MUCH slower)
TAKE IN ACCOUNT THAT Windows Se7en is a graphical operating system so a system equipped with a dedicated graphics chip will always perform better than anything integrated-graphics – equipped.
As of graphics card specifications, you should look for something similar to this:
- ATI HD graphics chip.
- 512MB of VRAM(Video Random Access Memory) – the dedicated amount of memory that only the graphics card will be using (unlike the memory for an integrated graphics chip, which is shared with the computer’s RAM – so if a computer has 2GB of RAM and come equipped with an integrated graphics chip that can use memory OF UP TO(ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE LAPTOP’S SPECIFICATIONS – UP TO MEANS IT’S INTEGRATED*) 512MB it means the graphics card uses the laptop’s memory as VRAM(Video RAM) so, after the graphics card takes it’s share of RAM, you will be left with less than 2GB of RAM to use(which is little when using Windows Se7en).
* ->There are laptops that come with a dedicated graphics chip capable of using more than the memory it was initially equipped with -> so , apart fm using it’s DEDICATED VRAM, it can get to use some RAM -> you can always check whether if a laptop comes with a dedicated or an integrated graphics card by using Google(Google is your friend).
OK, so what more should you look for at a graphics card:
- the bus width-> it’s the ‘ road ‘ used by the graphics card in order to transfer the data from it to the processor and to it from the processor (or RAM).
SO: having a 512MB dedicated graphics card equipped with a width-limited bus is equal to having 512MB and not being able to make use of all of them but only 128 or 256(as a maximum) of them.
Now, of course there are many laptops that come with a 64-bit – wide bus for the graphics card and try to search for something that comes with a wider bus, but if you cannot encounter or if they force you to pay too much for that, just get something with a 64-bit bus.
Also, make sure that the graphics card frequencies are high enough (if they’re very high, it’s good for speed but take in account that its gonna reduce the amount of time you’ll be able to use the graphics card at it’s maximum potential( while gaming or maybe watching HD videos ).
Make sure the graphics card come with Pixel Shaders, Vertex Shaders and MAKE SURE IT’S A DirectX 10 chip(it’s better when using Windows Se7en and when playing the latest games).
You can do this by going to the manufacturer’s web page and search for a chip:
If the laptop’s specifications are:
ATi HD3200 Graphics then:
