I want my laptop to switch off my user (not log off) when i close the lid because I want it to ask for a password when I open it rather than go straight into my account.

Go into Display Properties in Control Panel. On the Screen Saver tab, set up a screen saver. Any one will do. Click the "On resume, password protect" chekcbox. Now click on the Power button. Click the Advanced tab. On the "When I close my laptop" select the "suspend" option. Click OK all the way out. Now, when you close the lid on your laptop, it will go into suspend mode. When you open the lid it will come out of suspend mode and prompt for a password.
