I have emptied all visible files on flash drive but the available space is much less than the total space. i.e. 4gig drive says 1.12gig available.

My Computer > Right click on the device > Format… , then choose whether you would like Fat32 on NTFS , most are Fat32 but..

reformat. right click to ?: drive.
or go properties, tools, then "error-checking" click check now!
