What I am wanting to do is add page numbers to my word document. But I don’t want them all on the same side. I have tried every way I can think of. I have used the header and footer, also I have tried using the add page numbers button; but it doesn’t work. Example: I want the first page blank without any page numbers but on the second page I want it to say 2 on the left hand side of the paper, and the I want it to alternate on the next page. I want it to have 3 on the right-hand side of the page. Can you please help me; any suggestions are much appreciated.

To have the page numbers on different sides for odd and even pages and to start numbering on the second page, click on the File menu and choose ‘Page Setup’. On the Layout tab under ‘Headers and Footers’ put a check mark at ‘Different odd and even’ and at ‘Different first page’.

the location of the page numbers will be consistent…if you choose to have it on the right hand side or the left…eliminating the number on the first page is simple and you already know that…the only way to alternate is to print one page at a time and format it the way you want it before printing it…it takes longer, but will produce what you are wanting…good luck!!!

Try this:
1 Go to the File->Page Setup menu item.
2. Click the Layout tab.
3. Check the Different Odd and Even box.
4. Check the Different First Page box.
5. Click OK.
6. Click on Insert->Page numbers. "Outside" should be selected for Alignment.
7. Click OK.
If you don’t already have more than two pages to look at, I suggest putting in two page breaks to verify the positioning with Print Preview.
That should do it.
