basically it functions as a normal router, except it projects the signal wirelessly. i would visit a local Best Buy, Walmart, Target, etc. and ask the personnel there. What router you purchase depends on what exactly you want: range, signal type (b/g/n), any other additional features (firewalling, etc.). You can pick a basic wireless g-router as cheap as $30-40 (usually Belkin brand, which I would recommend you avoid as I’ve had poor experiences with their products). I would check out Linksys or Netgear instead.
A wireless router gives you wifi, depending on the router, can give you a higher internet connection. A wireless router is what you need if you want to take your laptop around the house without any wires. There usually around $50 for a decent one
Wireless routers don’t always help your laptop. Most of the time people have to configure their settings on the router AND the laptop. The cheapest way is to hook up a ethernet cord (Found at Best Buy or Radio Shack) from your laptop to your router. I bought a 100ft ethernet for around $50. Most of the time, wireless lags and is really slow. Just buy an ethernet cord, and it’ll be faster.
A Wireless Router will take the internet that you usually get and transmit it wireless for you. It’s a one-time buy and you will be able to get internet access throughout your house without having to plug in your laptop. Simply buy one, plug it into the usual jack you plug your laptop into, and then using your laptop set up a wireless network. I would usually go to Best Buy mainly because it doesn’t make a great deal of difference in price but one of the large corporations will be able to get exactly which router you need for your specific laptop and Operating System. Somewhere like Circuit City or Best Buy. Message me if you have any questions you would like me to answer=]

wall jack –> modem –> wireless router –> laptop.
