Most likely Windows Vista is right protected and a special software is needed to disable the right protection feature before being able to make a legitimate copy.

You don't need to use the Windows CD disk to re-install Windows over a damaged operating system.

Making a backup copy of your hard drive will give you a better result because it will not affect your license agreement.

Every time you use the CD disk to install the operating system you are using up license agreements. Remember that your license agreement only permits so many re-installation of Windows before it is void.

Backing up the hard drive and using this backup will not
void the license since it needs not to be re-activated.

Keep your original DVD Windows disk in a safe storage place and use a backup instead of using the original DVD
Windows disk when re-installing the operating system.
