How to insert roman numeral and the arabic page numbers in one same document?

   It can be tricky if you haven’t done it before, but just follow the steps below… I do it ALL the time!
   1. From your Table of Contents page go to Header/Footer View
   2. Click to go into the footer
   3. From your Header/Footer tool bar, click "Format Page Number" icon (you can see what each icon does what by hovering your mouse over each)
   4. Where it says "Number format:" click the arrow and select the lower case roman numerals (standard for TOC page numbering)
   5. At the bottom of that window where it says "Start at", click the arrows to start at one (i)
   6. Click the "Insert Page Number" icon in the header/footer toolbar. Your page number will appear. Center it if that’s where you want the number
   7. Click "OK".

   That takes care of the TOC. Now for the rest of the document and a change in page numbering:

   8. At the last page of your Table of Contents, remove the page break if you have one. (don’t worry)
   9. From the "Insert" dropdown menu, click "Break" and then "next page". That will insert a Section Break. You need this in order to have alternate page numbering (roman numerals in the first section, and arabic in the second section)
   10. Get into Header/Footer view.
   11. Click to go to the Footer
   12. In the Footer of this section you will see the words "Same as Previous". You will need to change that because you are changing your page numbering. You need to click the "Link to previous" icon from your Header/Footer tool bar. (again, hover your mouse over the icons to find it.) This step UNlinks you from the previous section with the roman numeral numbering
   13. Follow steps 3-7 above (only be sure to change your number format to arabic and "start at" 1.

   Try this:

   In Word versions prior to Word 2007:

   1.At the top of the first page you want Arabic-numbered (1, 2, 3), click the Insert->Break menu item.
   2.Insert a Next Page type section break.
   3.Click the Insert->Page Numbers menu item.
   4.In the Page Numbers dialog box, click the Format button.
   5.In the Page Number Format dialog box, select Arabic numbers in the number format list box.
   6.If you don’t want the page numbers to be continuous between the two sections, set Page Numbering to start at number one. The radio button should switch to Start At.
   7.Click OK.
   8.Click OK again.
   9.Go back to the first page of the document (now in the first section).
   10.Repeat steps 3-5, but this time set the Number format to Roman Numerals.
   11.Repeat steps 6-8. (Note: The actual insertion of page numbers in the page header or footer doesn’t have to happen. Only the formatting selection is necessary. To avoid the insertion, click the Cancel button instead of the OK in Step 8).

   In Word 2007:

   1.At the top of the first page you want Arabic-numbered, click the Page Layout->Page Setup->Breaks icon.
   2.Insert a Next Page type section break.
   3.Click the Insert->Page Numbers->Format Page Numbers menu item.
   4.In the Page Numbers dialog box, select Arabic numbers in the number format list box.
   5.If you don’t want the page numbers to be continuous between the two sections, set Page Numbering to start at number one. The radio button should switch to Start At.
   6.Click OK.
   7.Go back to the first page of the document (now in the first section).
   8.Repeat steps 3-4, but this time set the Number format to Roman Numerals.
   9.Repeat steps 5-6. (Note: The actual insertion of page numbers in the page header or footer doesn’t have to happen. Only the formatting selection is necessary. To avoid the insertion, click the Cancel button instead of the OK in Step 6).

   That should do it.
