I bought a new hp laptop and the specs say 250 GB harddrive. I checked on my computer, properties, and the C drive shows only 220? the model number on the computer at the hp website and on my computer match. Maybe for some reason I just cannot see all the memory? Help?

2 possible reasons 1) when you buy a desktop or laptop computer, it is lists the hard drive capacity WITHOUT anything on it. As soon as you install the operating system (Windows XP/Vista/7, MAC OS X/Leopard, etc) that takes up free space. 2) If you bought it from a retailer or HP direct, it could have what they call "bloatware" on it. This is either free or trial software that really serves no purpose or bogs down your system. You can remove any uneccesary software thourgh the add/remove option or that program may have an uninstall option. Caution: unless you are certain you know the software you are removing is bloatware, I would suggest waiting a few months and if there are software apps you havent used, then feel free to uninstall them.

That is normal drives are always rated higher than they are in real life. Plus you probaly have a hidden system restore drive which is taking up space.

In mechanical terms 1MB=1000KB, where as in software terms 1MB=1024KB. So this leads to a less amount of hard drive space being displayed. More over the computer manufacturers also use some drive space to install backup and restore programs. Hope you understood the reason now.
Happy computing

its because of the recycle bin
recycle bin takes some percent of hard disk it
as if you delete something, recycle bin having 10% space of each drive
or it could be because temp file delete them…
