I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 and want to connect my computer to my TV so what I am playing on my computer, such as a movie file, will show on my tv screen. How do I go about this and what do I need to purchase exactly and from where? Dell said to buy it through them but I feel this part should be a universal cord such as a USB cable or something where you can just buy it at a store and probably pay a lot less and not have to wait for it to be shipped and all. Can anyone help me out with this?
Thanks
I spoke with someone from dell and was told I need a S-video TV-out connector. Can this be purchased at like best buy and stuff?

does your TV support vga, dvi or s-video. check if both your laptop and your TV have both of one the three connections. Most TV’s will have s-video but check both your laptop and your TV anyways.

There are adapters for this such as

which convert VGA signals.
Without looking, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are PCMCIA adapters that do the same thing for notebooks.
Some TVs also support DVI or VGA inputs. A lot of the newer TVs especially LCD screens have these inputs.
Your notebook might also have a S-Video output. If it does, it’s a matter of getting a S-video to composite cable.
Best bet is the S-video cable which most notebooks have. The quality is lower through this method though. For best results, you should get a TV with VGA/DVI inputs.
