I’m trying to upgrade my notebook to run some new programs. I need at least 512 of ram… It only came with 256 and is doing well, but I have two slots, Should I buy 2 512 sticks of RAM or just one and keep the old one. Also, how do I know what RAM will fit my computer?

If you can afford it, buy two 512 sticks. It’s always better to have lots of RAM. THat is the random access memory, the memory the computer uses to run programs (not store them), the more ram the faster it works.

RAM makes your computer run faster. If oyu have a note book, you gotta ask them for note book ram. Notebook ram is smaller than the desktop. and 2 512 rams will make it better by alot.
Hope this helps :D

RAM is your Random Access Memory. Everything you do (EVERYTHING) like opening files, browsing web, listening to music, etc. is stored here. Ram usally isn’t very large becuase it doesn’t need to be. After you turn off your pc, the Ram is erased.
If I was you, I would by one 512MB stick of Ram to put into the computer as well as the one already in there.
Contact your computer manufacturer for information on what type to put in your computer.
If your not computer "savy", try haveing a trained professional install it for you, like Geek Squad from Best Buy. (also a good place to purchase Ram)

People here recommend Crucial.com website to find compatible memory.
Check the prices.. I see 1GB modules on sale in stores like Fry’s or Buy.com quite often.

I may not supply you with the most complete answer because there are a few types of RAM (random access memory) but i can tell you would like an answer in laymans terms.
RAM is short for Random Access Memmory, It is measured in MB (megabytes) most computers come with 256 mb new computers come with upwards of 2 gb. All aplications and windows take up a certain amount of kb (kilobytes 1/1000 of a mb).
Have you ever experienced slow proformance because you had too many internet explorers or applications open? its because of a shortage of RAM. This new application you need its probably very RAM intensive, go with the 2 512 i got to study for finals i think you gothe jist of it
