Free:
AVG – Free, lightweight, and good for finding virus’
Avast – Free, popular, nice skins
Malwarebytes AntiMalware – Most AV’s don’t protect against malware while this does
Paid:
McAfee – Very good, popular, protects about anything
NOD32 – Overprotective, sometimes blocks programs for no reason
–
Regardless, people can still bypass these securities by making their virus’ undetected so just be careful.
The best overall Anti-Virus is Avast. It updates itself and its completely free. Just uninstall and re-install every 60 days. You can even purposely catch a virus and avast will catch it, its also really good if you like to use P2P programs like Limewire, Frostwire, or Torrents. Really Safe I assure you.
Honestly I would say Kaspersky Internet Security would be your best bet. Constant updates, good firewall options to block inbound and outbound connections for software or whatever. Easy on computer resources. I also like the interface a lot better than BitDefender’s. I can say not to go with Norton because it’s a resource hog. Don’t get mcafee or AVG. EsetNOD is a great means of protection. Avast is also a more affordable and good protector.
All and all I’d go with Kaspersky, no matter the cost.
For malware, malaware bytes is amazing. So maybe using it in conjunction with one of my other suggestions. Hope this helps!
Well I’m a big fan of McAfee. I use total protection 2010 and it works like a dream. It runs well in the background and doesn’t slow the computer down a lot. It also has some pretty good features to keep your computer running at its best. I have never had any problems using it. I have used Norton as well, both internet security and 360 and its not as good as McAfee by far. It’s generally slow and only does the basics. 360 is probably the worst as it thinks even having an internet history is a threat and will not shut up until you delete your history. Kaspersky isn’t all together that good as it conflicts with windows security center a great deal but it does keep your computer safe, however this only does the basics as well. Go for McAfee Total Protection – keeps you pc safe, running fast and has some great little tools.
I have kaspersky internet security and i used to have norton, and kaspersky caught 88 trojans that i had that norton didnt so i would reccomend kaspersky
The best anti-virus is Kaspersky or Norton but they are not free. Kaspersky does offer a free online scan but it doesn’t remove what it finds. Second best free are Avast and AVG and others. The Microsoft firewall that comes free with XP and Vista is quite good but unfortunately provides no visibility. If you need visibility, try the free Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is very good but it is difficult for me to say it is the best. The best firewalls are not free. You have phishing filters in Firefox 3 and IE 7 and IE 8 (Smart Screen Filter) and AVG. It’s strictly a question of how often the phishing filter database gets updated with accurate information. It’s tough to say which is best.

Norton 360 seems to be the most popular nowadays, and doesn’t drain system resources like previous Norton titles used to.
However I’ve never had any issues with the freebies: AVG or Avast.

No such thing. Whatever is best this week is not what’s best next week. Malware changes all the time – which is why we keep catching it.
Use a nice, free resident antivirus and scan with a different program periodically.
