I would recommend you getting Windows XP because Vista has a lot of incompatibilities with Softwares and Games out there in the market. It will need at least another year for Vista to be really stable.

Don’t go for Vista, it is new and Microsoft is planning to release a SP1 for it.
Xp is safer and better XP Service Pack 2. Don’t go for SP3 unless you plan to buy a Genuine Microsoft.

Go with Windows XP. WindowsVista still has a lot of bugs in it.

I’d go for one from the Vista stable – it’s got to be better & more cost effective in the long run – Microsoft no longer support some of their older operating systems & it’s a fair guess that they will support Vista for a lot longer than XP.
Other than that there is always Linux – not as user friendly but more & more people are using it.

your new PC wont run vista well so stick with xp.
or get some flavour of linux if you like to fiddle around with the os and like to reinstall os.

Linux is the best!
